Everton Thrash Newcastle 3-1 to Reach League Cup Quarter-Finals
David Moyes’s side secured a convincing 3-1 victory at Hill Dickinson Stadium and will face fourth-tier Fleetwood in the last eight
Everton secured an impressive 3-1 victory over Newcastle United at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Thursday to book their place in the League Cup quarter-finals, where they will face fourth-tier Fleetwood.

David Moyes’s side ended their three-match winless run with a commanding performance, scoring through James Garner, Hayden Hackney and Thierno Barry before Dan Burn grabbed a late consolation for Newcastle.
The result moves Everton closer to a potential first League Cup final appearance in 43 years, with their quarter-final against Fleetwood scheduled for the week commencing December 14.
Everton opened the scoring in the 34th minute when Garner finished clinically after being set up by Hackney just inside the penalty area.
The midfielder stretched to guide the ball into the far corner for his first goal since January.
The hosts doubled their advantage just before half-time following a swift counter-attack.
Barry delivered a cross into the six-yard box, where Hackney timed his run perfectly to volley past Newcastle goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek.
Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle responded by introducing Joelinton, Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa at the interval in an attempt to revive his side.
Wissa had an opportunity to reduce the deficit shortly after coming on, but he failed to make proper contact with Joe Willock’s pass, directing his header straight at Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.
Everton punished the missed opportunity in the 69th minute when Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall delivered a cross for Barry, who fired home from close range to make it 3-0.
Burn eventually pulled one back for Newcastle with a header from Willock’s cross in the 88th minute, but the goal came too late to change the outcome.
The closing stages were marred by a confrontation involving several players, following Newcastle’s late response.
Everton had earlier survived promising efforts from Willock and Fabian Schär, with Pickford making important saves to keep the visitors at bay.
The victory sets up an intriguing quarter-final against Fleetwood, who produced one of the competition’s biggest surprises by eliminating Premier League champions Arsenal on Tuesday.
Fleetwood held Arsenal to a 1-1 draw before winning the tie in a penalty shoot-out at Highbury, earning a place in the last eight.
Everton will be hoping to use the opportunity to end a lengthy wait for silverware. The club have never won the League Cup, having lost their two final appearances in 1977 and 1984.
Their most recent major trophy remains the FA Cup, which they won in 1995, leaving supporters eager for another memorable cup run.
The match also attracted attention before kick-off after Everton announced that on-loan Manchester City winger Jack Grealish was unavailable for selection because of a breach of club discipline.
Reports suggested Grealish had missed training without authorisation, although the club did not provide further details in its announcement.
His absence, however, did little to disrupt Everton’s performance as Moyes’s men delivered a convincing display.

Newcastle will have an opportunity to respond when both sides meet again in the Premier League at St James’ Park on Monday.
